How do you keep track of your progress in the gym?

How do you keep track of your training/progress from week to week?

When I'm at the gym I see a lot of people training and, by all appearances, not recording anything. Personally I use the ol' pen and notebook but how do you keep track of your progress week to week? Notebook? Use an app? Mental note? Other? What are the benefits and drawbacks (if any) of your method?

Mirror bro, mirror.
I look in the mirror (alot) and say "faaaaaaaaaaaaarrrk Grunta, you are one sick looking kunce'

I don't record anything.
Log it here (very occasionally) but usually just remember my lifts from the last time I trained

google docs on excel. I have a tab for each year of training. Columns for BW, exercise, sets, reps, notes and injuries. Then I have a tab for maxes 1-12rm.

I'm also an accountant :p

Hehe, yeah don't worry, I get a hard on for stats too. I record a lot of info about training and diet and then do my analyses. Do you record your info before transposing into Excel or just remember it?

So how do you ensure from week to week and over longer periods that you're progressively overloading? (Aside from the massive slabs of meat hanging off your frame).

I have the memory of a gold fish so use the ole fashioned pen and paper, not so much for tracking progress but for remembering weighs and reps from previous workouts so I have a starting point

I have it all sorted for the next week or so in docs. I take a pic of the day I'm doing before I go so I remember and if I do anything different I just put a note in and update when I'm on a computer.

Have another spreadsheet for body comp progress with nutrition info :)

There are a few apps about.
Fitocracy is one that tracks. Although it seems a bit gimmicky. FitNotes is a good one I use. Plain and simple and has overall result graph for each exercise and shows your improvements.
Another good one is JEFit. Check it out

The weights and desired reps are printed out from my spreadsheet before each workout. AMRAP goals are strategised before I step out of the door, usually as I am meditating and doing mobilty warm ups.
Once I finish my training I rush home and fill in my spreadsheet so everything is accurately recorded verbatim.

Jefit app.every exercise under the sun, if it doesn't have it you can add customs.

Built in set timer, pre loads previous work outs lifts, program different days, months etc. Charts and logs all history.. Can even do super sets.

I was using pen and paper. Love that shit. Moved on to excel spreadsheet attached to googledrive, each day laid out with sets and rep ranges that I am aiming for, then what I have hit. Also have a warm up tab, weight track tab

Tried Jefit, not overly keen.

Fitocracy was good til it became facebook.

the squat rack, absolutely awesome, waiting for android app though.

Below is a screenshot of the text file I use. Yep, old school Notepad .txt files. I find Notepad just an easy no nonsense program that all computers can open.

It's taken a while to evolve to what it is now. But now at a glance I can see all the exercises, and different weight/reps/sets options. After each workout I'll see if I can go heavier in any of the lifts, or even drop the weight if my form is suffering. I'll alternate the reps and sets every 4 weeks, so the first week I'll look at my notes before I leave work and head to the gym. Then after a few weeks in I'll know what I'm doing.

I also have a similar text file for diet.
