Last year on a routine trip out of Sydney to Heaton's (4 Hours out to sea), after a solid day of no results, I hung up the jig and everyone prepared to bring in their pilchard cubes
No sooner had we been groaning about what a tough day it was, one of the reels starts taking line, then another.
Being awfully pessimistic, we were all exepecting small albacore tuna
But the line kept peeling off
Under heavy drag, one tuna popped off, and the other just kept on going!
We had barely any line left so began to chase the fish down.
Some 90 odd minutes into the fight, the reel handle snapped right off. This wasn't happening to us, well, this couldn't happen, right?
Wrong. Improvisations were made and after two more hours of manually putting line on the reel, only just outrunning death circles under wide open throttle, and everyone's balls retracting into their guts, we sunk a few gaffs into a 100kilogram Bluefin tuna - a fish you simply do not catch off of Sydney.
It is a day I will never forget
