Yes it is "real"
Like any other adaptive process, your adrenal glands will shut down to hypertrophy so you can deal with bigger stresses. But this doesn't mean you shouldn't lift while this is happening, quite the opposite. I tried my hardest to overtrain and get my adrenals to shut down but just ended up with upper back cramping
Another excuse I hate is cortisol or whatever increases after an hour therefore always keep your workouts short.... Most strong people I've met all work out for ages.
