COLTON - A married couple remained hospitalized Monday after police say they were critically injured in an attack by a 300 pound naked body builder late Saturday. The violent incident prompted neighbors to intervene and detain the man until police arrived.
"It's a good thing our officers arrived on scene so quickly, because who knows who was next," said Colton police Cpl. Ray Mendez.
Police received a call at 11:45 p.m. about a naked man attacking people in the 1100 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue.
They discovered that Ruben Arzu, 22, was waiting on the front porch of a home when a married couple arrived at the residence. The woman, who is 34 years old, entered the home to dial 9-1-1. Her 35-year-old husband confronted the 5-foot-10-inch naked man.
"The suspect violently attacked the husband, causing major head trauma and injuries," Mendez said. "As the husband is getting beaten, the wife comes out and the suspect shifts his attention to her."
Police said the man picked up and threw the woman around, causing facial injuries and multiple deep cuts to the top of her head.
He ran after the attack, but neighbors surrounded him in a backyard of another home, officers said.
He resisted arrest when police arrived. Police used a Taser gun on him, but he didn't respond to it.
"It took four police officers to handcuff him and it took four sets of handcuffs to restrain him," Mendez said.
Arzu
and the victims were taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment. The victims were listed in stable condition Monday. Police expect to book Arzu in jail on suspicion of attempted homicide and aggravated mayhem.
Officers say they suspect he had been taking steroids and was under the influence of other drugs.
