I've reacted well to Beta Alanine in the past. I found it really helped with power in my heavy compound lifts. When I used to use it I got the tingles (no discomfort) just before arriving at the gym. If it was only a placebo the tingles probably helped as it felt like it was actually doing something.
GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) also has a similar affect, although its affects seem to deminish over time.
