Yes I would like to know what the difference is between barefoot lifting and lifting shoes? Why is it so important to have lifting shoes, what do they do/help?
To begin with its a basic safety issue, you wear them for the same reason you'd wear shoes playing soccer. Also having a non compressive heel improves leverages for most people, especially if you squat high bar.

I've started lifting heavy with a belt and my lower back thanks me for it.
My previous injuries were caused by terrible form though not a lack of a belt.
I think though all things (form) being equal a belt would certainly do no harm. And from my personal experience my midsections feels much more solid with it on.
At the end of the day it depends on the person - some guys wear there belts the whole ses, some will wear it only for max effort lifts - some prefer only for squats or some only for deads....just find what works best for you and do it...
I use a belt for anything over 75% of 1RM in squat & deadlift. Since I started wearing a belt, like NPR said, my lower back gets less sore the next day & therefore I recover much better.
