Hi

My name is Buzza and I need a bit of advice.

From 1989 - 1995 I trained and competed in North QLD and won a few comps and placed fairly well in others.

I was a lot younger then and also single.... marriage, kids and a company came along and now I am 47 years old, a tad overweight and REALLY unfit.

I still retain some of my size. I am thinking about getting back into BB as I am at that age were diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and other nasty middle age maladies can manifest if you let them.... I have had an epiphany that I should really get fit and look after myself. I LOVED BB in my younger years as there was a goal based target (comps)

I cannot go to the gym everyday (like my buffed and gorgeous wife) as I need to see something to work for... then move to next.

Can someone tell me about muscle memory and also what supplements to use and is there a desired training regime for old BB of my ...er... vintage.

Thanks in advance

Buzza

I read alot of Dave Drapers blogs which are about training in middle to old age. He is a fucking geriatric, nearly 70 I think but still a unit and also a pretty funny writer.

Other then that pick some heavy shit up and put it back down. You've done it before it's not rocket science

How about training for strength, not aesthetics? The goals are measurable and objective. The technical side of things is fascinating, if you're drawn to detail and the online info is unbelievable these days. If you were to compete, the combinations of age and weight classes give us old blokes our own paddock away from the young bucks. Aesthetics is still a side-effect, but me, I feel much more comfortable telling the kids I'm training to be strong, rather than training to be beautiful/sexy/whatever.

Hey Buzza, Muscle memory works but I don't think it has anything to do with muscle. The nervous system connections that you developed in your previous training are still there waiting to be used so you will be able to communicate with the muscle much better than a novice. In addition to that, you already understand how to train and what works. The combination of the two adds up to muscle memory in my opinion and guarantees you very good initial progress.

You don't need to train every day. A few days a week is plenty. Just devise yourself a simple split or a couple of full body workouts to rotate through.

I would advise you to train in a similar manner to how you did before. There is nothing about being 47 that means that you can't train like you did at 25 just build your way back to your old intensity levels at a reasonable pace.

You will find goals once you start that will keep you going. Plenty of milestones on the strength side and even BB comps if you find that you are keen again. Apart from that, just being a good role model for your kids and maybe getting them into training as well will probably help.

By the way... this is me at a comp in 93
