Athletics bases strength programs?

Azz

I used to be right into athletics and competing when I was in high school (state champion longjump for 3 years, 3rd at national titles). I stopped for a few years, not because I didn't enjoy it anymore, but being a teenager and having fun seemed more important at the time (which it probably was), rather than being burnt out by now, I am looking forward to getting back into it, I am 19 Y/O now.

I've been training with weights for the last couple of years roughly, mainly doing hypertrophy programs. I'm much stronger now. I like the way I train now, but I know the program would have to be altered to be more sport specific.

So I was wondering if anyone has done an athletics based weights program (mainly for sprints or longjump), and what did it consist of?

I'm going to see a coach on the weekend, not sure what he is going to do (write me a program or what not), he's a high level coach, see what happens I guess.

Oh and I haven't really run that much in the last couple of years, so let's hope I've still got it :p. Will take some time to get fit again.

If your going to see a high level coach, I would disregard what advice you get from here.

good luck with your comeback.

What is your height and what do you weigh? Also what are you lifts?

Height: I think 181cm
Weight: 73kg

I haven't done any 1RM's for a while (if ever), usually do 6-10 reps. So lifts are as follows:
BP: 110 (6-8 reps)
Squat: 160
DL: 100 (8 reps - Only started deadlifting againt last week, had a bad back for ages)
MP: 60kg (6-8 reps)
What else? Hmm.

Yeah I was just curious as to what the style of training would be, it'd be more about power right? I'll see what this coach will say but I'm not too sure if he will be writing me a program or not.
good luck with your comeback.
Thank you very much :].

You are not big for your height so with a bit of training that strength will come in handy for your athletics. I would not worry too much, being strong will do your power some good. A lot of technique and jump work and you will be jumping well again.

160kg squat?

100kg deadlift?

damn.

Haha bad I know.

100kg isn't my 1RM for deads, it's just what I did last week ( 8 reps, 3 sets) for the first time in about 12 months :p Thought I'd start small, build it up a bit.

And the squat - I don't have much of an excuse for that lol ;p, although it was for 8 reps, 3 sets..

I'm looking forward to the program change, really enjoying my training and getting back into sprinting/jumping will be fun too.

160kg for 8 reps at 73kg is a good squat mate, it is only the difference in between the two that Oli is making a point about.

I think you will find in a few weeks that your deadlift is a **** load higher than 100kg.

very true. my coach is about to embark on his level 3 in strength & conditioning with the aust strength & conditioning association. I listen to him a lot more than guys hiding behind screens (except for a few guys that know their shiz( ie PTC & Fadi

I am with PTC on this too, but I will still give you some advice to keep up your confidence and explain some things to you. The best thing you can do is to have a coach there with you even if it is not every session. As long as the coach is not a nutter that is.

Hey PB who is your coach?
