Yeah, for the powerlifter it’s tricky I don’t think there is much room for anything else.
 

yes, that should be obvious. lifting near maximal weights as a sport requires considerable familiarity.

however, for a non-lifter, a 1 rep or low rep maximal set is much less important as a strength improvement indicator. up to each individual what he or she prefers. ben Johnson used a 6 rep all out set as he and coach believed less likelihood of injury and less taxing on body.
 
20 rep sets will work, but i would prefer sets of 8-12 with moderate weights. this will allow a reasonably high percentage of weight to be used for training, above 60% of one's maximal single lift.
 
Thing is for me when I did higher rep sets,my back would lose tightness from tiring first and I'd end up doing abominations.
