    Nutritional figures on food labels

    This is something which has made me wonder sometimes. If 1 gram of carbs or protein are 4 calories, and 1 gram of fat 9 calories, why is the total calories per serving or per 100g often considerably different to the sum of protein, carb and fat totals?
