    The PB Thread

Last week, I managed 3x10x37.5kg OHP. My strength endurance on OHP is so bad that I'm normally hard pressed to manage a set of 10 at 40% (and my best OHP is 60kg), so that was pleasant. I'm not sure if I've posted this or not, but I'm currently up to sets of 19 pull ups. 20's coming soon.

Why is everyone trying to squat so much?

Are you saying that gravity does not apply when objects are forced to move on a 5 degree (approx) deviation? Again, you haven't explained how any of this is unnatural. The only thing that could possibly be an argument here is that torque changes things...but that doesn't make things unnatural...

Your "Body Dysmorphia". Let's hear it!

I have these problems while talking to friends. Only time I don't is when my hands have a set task to be doing, even if that job is just to hold a cup.

Why is everyone trying to squat so much?

A fixed path is only bad if it's a bad path. In what way are the loads of a smith machine unnatural? In what way do barbell squats not apply shear forces? As an educated guess, I'd say people are more likely to hurt themselves in a smith machine from getting cocky and/or thinking "machine = I...

How long did it take you to get to 1.5xBW squat and 2xBW deadlift?

I can't answer that very clearly or easily. At the time that I first squatted 1.5 and deadlifted 2x bodyweight, I had been training for 12weeks. Before that, I had been out of the gym for 3 months. Before that, I had done my first bout of Starting Strength, which had gotten me close to that...

Your "Body Dysmorphia". Let's hear it!

I hear what you're saying. My point isn't that I know everything there is to know about strength, but I do know how to train effectively at a beginner and intermediate level, and have sufficient knowledge to weigh in on the pros and cons of various techniques and training methods. I more or less...

Your "Body Dysmorphia". Let's hear it!

This sounds about right. Only amongst powerlifters and internet lifters is 170kg weak on anything. I hang out in strength gyms and feel like an insignificant nobody; I come to these forums and am overtly told I'm not allowed an opinion on anything strength-related because I'm not strong enough...

Your "Body Dysmorphia". Let's hear it!

Rather than being insecure about a body part, or thinking I'm too fat/thin etc., I'm self-conscious about my posture, gait and body language. If I'm not doing anything with my hands, I don't know what to do with them, and I'm very self-conscious about having these two limbs sticking out of my...

    GHR Substitute Ideas?

True. For this reason, I now make a point of calling them Nordic leg curls, which is their other name (and a much, much more accurate indication of what they are/do).

    Deadlifts

I've been practicing fukarounditis all year, so none of my lifts are any better than they were towards the end of last year. In attempting to rebuild my deadlifts lately, I found that just practicing them a lot worked wonders initially, but once I got to about 75% of my old 1RM in working...

    Powerbuilding Routines

PHUL makes me sick inside, not because there's anything wrong with it, but because it's just PHAT by another name.

the what u saw at the gym TODAY thread

Last night I saw how relaxed my female clients are about PB's if I don't tell them that they're doing a PB. I also saw one of them rep out 13 OHP's with the empty barbell. Definitely time for her to add some weight. Later, Tim and Josh decided to stop lifting in one of the power racks, and...

it is Sunday. Tell us your Victory this week.

Perseverance. On Thursday, I was doing 10x3 bench press, but once the 7th set was done, I knew I wasn't going to get an 8th, 9th or 10th triple out. I was going to stop, but then opted to be less of a pussy than that, and get my last 3 sets in 4's with 5kg less. That was a nice success. I also...

    A result of your environment

Mmm, when I switched from a commercial gym to SSG, I did make some significant progress over the first 6 months, but I think that was more to do with a few tweaks to technique and programming than the people around me.
