"MUTANT ON A MISSION - Doherty's Gym, Melbourne, Australia"

Tough to do when that space is what's putting bread on your family's table. My wife's income is the mortgage, my income is food, utilities, transport, rates, insurance and all that - plus some of the mortgage. Apart from housing, everything we have comes from this 30 square metres I'm sitting in...

Power Rack - Dimensions should be?

Full rack is more solid and safe. Necessary for squats and benching alone without a spotter. Presses, deadlifts and any quick lifts will be done outside the rack. If you know how to do cleans you can do without a rack. Clean - front squat - press and some occasional deadlifts would be a full...

    What is proper squat form?

Start about shoulder-width apart, feet turned about 30 degrees out. Squat down below parallel, keeping the back extended. At the bottom, your thighs should be in line with your feet, so you will probably have to consciously shove your knees out. That achieved, now play with it. So long as you...

    Podcast interview with Markos

Blake has done a little interview with Markos, who used to post here as PTC. He talks about the journey from building trade to garage gym to ProRaw and all the rest, and the growth of PL in Australia - we now get more people at novice meets than we used to have at national competitions...

Advice on some new squat shoes

Simple, solid, cheap. www.awf.com.au/merchandise/productdetails.aspx?productid=12 Most WL shoes these days are sold to crossfitters, who will do some snatches and then some sprints, so the soles are less solid than a pure WL shoe. If you're just lifting in them go old-school.

The Internet and the good and bad

This is true, unfortunately. The masters lifters are a bit better with this. The perspective of someone who's been doing it a year or so is less useful, particularly if they've been juicing.

The Internet and the good and bad

When there were not many barbell coaches (either PL or WL), forums were among the better sources of information for new lifters. Now there are more decent coaches, so forums are relatively less useful. As well, the tolerance of general stupidity tends to put serious lifters off.

My partner is convinced packaged veggies in the freezer section are healthier then fr

Army and gym experience. Men are more likely to mouth off and have strong opinions about things despite a lack of experience or knowledge of them. There's a reason we're known for not asking directions or reading the instructions for something we've bought.

My partner is convinced packaged veggies in the freezer section are healthier then fr

Unfrozen fruit and vegies are actually still alive. The nutrients only fizzle away when the food actually decays, goes rotten. Frozen or fresh, don't eat rotten fruit and vegies. Your partner evidently imagines, like many men, that the possession of a penis grants automatic knowledge about...

the what u saw at the gym TODAY thread

I saw this. 74yo, bunch of health issues, squats the empty bar for 3x3 for the first time in her 22nd session. Off meds for her health issues, takes stairs instead of ramp. Big Matt also came down last week and squatted 210 for some doubles, which is great, but Sheila with the empty bar is...

The Internet and the good and bad

Not sure if Plummer has much in writing, I have DVDs, or the downloadable versions; there are excerpts on that page. Not much on training, as I said, but the fitness business. Basically, he says what I've found in the stats, that since 2007 the big box gyms haven't made more money, they're...

The Internet and the good and bad

The list of people Darkoz has scorn for is too long for this thread. In this he is much like Rippetoe himself. But this thread is about who we are inspired by, not who we scorn. For me the big influences are Rip and - to soften the hardarse approach there - Dan John. Pavel Tstatsouline has...

Apparently it was only 2 minutes long. So probably only Hogan was happy with the experience.

Can you still eat healthy on a low budget?

Much of the information on the internet about food comes from the US, where regulations and enforcement of things like animal welfare, food safety and so on are much laxer. It's sort of like trying to understand Australian politics by watching Trump.

Can you still eat healthy on a low budget?

Azodicarbonamide. In the USA where they have shitty food regulation, yes - until 2014, when they stopped. In Australia, no.

That's nonsense, you can get a Sub for six bucks!

    certifications don't matter much

Most articles on choosing a trainer will tell you to check their certifications. I can assure you that it makes little difference. Trainers need to know anatomy and biomechanics, to have good communication skills, and to be able to teach correct movement. Some schools do the first, almost none...

Can you still eat healthy on a low budget?

You have started lifting. Your food bill will go up. And your ideas of what is healthy may change. I've never seen a vegan go far with lifting, I mean they don't even make it through novice linear progression. Vegetarian, yes, vegan, no.
