Jaw pain

brendon

New member
Well last night for no apparent reason my Jaw on the left side just started to hurt. its really annoying. was eating dinner as usual then it just started to hurt. right in jaw joint, feels like near ear and temple area.
from what ive read it seems like "Temporomandibular Joint TMJ disorder"
basically where the jaw muscles tighthen up.
now i cant think of why its happened.

one possibility. my upper traps have been quite tight lately and have been trying to massage them,. could it be possible that tight muscles in upper back or chest or neck are causing my jaw to tighten up?
its very frustrating as every time i chew it gets sore.
any suggestions for treatment or should i jsut go get a full massage or some deep muscle therapy massage.

If it was me I would just go to a bulk billing doctor. It will cost you all of $0.
Infinity times better than an e-diagnosis.

I can't see how your traps...or any other muscle except your jaw muscle...would affect your jaw muscle. If the doctor says that's what it is make sure you find out if there is a name for it so I can google it so I believe you :p

You haven't stood on any rusty nails lately by any chance?...

dont think i have stood on any nails.. hehe

thought maybe as ive had problems before where its been caused by muscle tightness elsewhere. its not so bad now but earlier today was bad. and hope it doesnt get to sore in the morning.

Hear, hear.

I'm sorry about the jaw pain but hope the doctor can diagnose it. He'd be able to confirm whether you have temporomandibular whateveritis, but most likely it'd be something else (e-diagnosis can be quite off the mark despite your best efforts and intentions!)

If you know of a bulk billing GP in canberra plz let me know. Theyre very few and far between.

I actually do have TMJ Dysfunction, was very bad a few years ago, which only in the past few months I started to get it more under control, apart from having bad episodes now and then. Something that I live with now. It is more manageable now, but I still live with pain everyday. Just not as bad as it used to be.

Does it hurt when you chew? Do you find it difficult in chewing certain foods? Because I am on a soft food diet, and can only do limited chewing. The first signs of chewing problems you have, I be getting the joints investigated.

Because TMJ can really affect you in many places. Not to scare you, but I went through so much crap with this issue.

Have to say that a GP is not enough for this. If you think you do have a TMJ disorder developing, ask your GP for a referral to a Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon. Not even dentists know enough about this disoder. You need a specialist invloved.

Thing is if you suspect you have TMJ, and you get ear related problems, you would probably have to go to a ENT as well, which is what I had to do, just to make sure there was nothing wrong with my ears.

To be blunt, it was when this problem was in the stages of developing that costed me a good job, because I was in that much pain (only the chewing problems came much later).

Personally, I would get it investigated. Take it from someone who lives with it.

Even though I had it bad, I know others with this disorder so bad that makes mine mild in comparison (and I know some had to go on disability pension because of how bad they had it).

As someone who has to live with this for the rest of my life, I am on a soft food diet. I minimize my chewing, merely as a means of managing this disorder. It is really a life long management for me.

I am at a stage now where I can only manage it. I do have my bad days, which there is nothing much I can do about it. And those bad days I just take it easy.

In the early period, I was really bad, my left side of my face was in that much agony, lets just say it really affected me, physcially and emotionally. And that wasn't enough, as I had chronic sinusitis as well, not to mention the area between my eyes and above the nose, was in that much pain, you cannot really describe it in words.

I went through hell when I found out I had this disorder, I knew I had it developing, but I had to go through so much of the merry go round to get it confirmed. Since I knew someone who had the disorder at the time mine was developing, I straight away went to a soft food diet.

WHen you next go to your GP, get the referral for a Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon. CHances are when you fill out all the paperwork, you will have to supply the name of your dentist too. Don't fully rely on dentists and GP's with this disorder.

TMJ is one of the most complex disorders one can have, because of its nature.

WIth me, this is what I have, I have a Chiro/Osteopath, TMJ Physio, (not all physios specilaize in this area), Oral Maxillofacial Surgeion, ENT, Dentist, and GP. See my jaw was deviating when I opened it. It is not as bad now.

I have the ENT, because of the ear pain I get, and earlier this year I had knife like ear pain, which thankfully it has not returned. I merely had a acute attack.

Even though I am better with this disorder, I have chronic pain, and I will live with that for the rest of my life. I am just not as bad as I used to be.

People have even gotten this disorder from having their wisdom teeth removed.

Get it investigated.
