i was considering buying a set of bar ends for my mtb , are they are of any use in the mtb scene or more geared towards roadies ?

Bar-ends are quite useful, especially when climbing. They aren 't just a thing for roadies ,

barends move your center of balance forward, which helps in keeping your front wheel down, while giving you a little extra pedaling torque.

Bar-ends also help on long rides by stretching your wrists and relax your hands by changing your grip position.

there are those in the scene that say "risers have no place on a mtb" do what suits you best ,
i use bar ends on my bike , barends give me some protection from branch slap, provide alternate hand positions and do allow a way better climbing position, by moving weight forward and opening the chest for better breathing.
