lol thats probably a hard argument to win whilst actually being in church hahaha!! You'd have a hard opposition in that situation.

Sounds like you avoid snobby arrogant prick type of people. Thats a good way to be. Some days i am surrounded by arrogant snobs, i can't stand them. I've even made friends with one before and got stabbed in the back by them, i should have known better.

I was petrified as a kid with all that jesus and sin stuff. used to think jesus was following me home from footy training or that the devil was in my room. but one day I said enough is enough and I taunted the supposed higher beings to the point I no longer believed. I may have been nine at time.

I was so proud when my 7 year old daughter told me she did not want to learn that religious stuff at school. I never said a word to her before that.

You havn't reached Big Mick Status yet;)

it really is a fascinating part of life as we age trying to sort out and understand the way we are. I am ashamed of some of the stuff I did when young. would religious belief made a difference. It is a hard one. I just think I was a smartass; probably lacking the right parent guidance given I never had it.

Well considering homosexuality and
phedophilia
is considered normal amongst churchy's, i'd be freaked out as well.

Your daughter sounds fantastic and i wish her all the best! Some people are born to be winners.

on the other side, religion seems very popular in many poorer countries offering a belief system that gives them strength. also huge amongst many wealthy americans.

I don't get it, but I understand it.

Yep you and many others, seems its a fairly common thing about guidance etc. When talking to some people that have excellent upbringings and super dooper parents, well they just don't understand how some other people havn't had all those special features of such a good upbringing.

I think a lot of us are ashamed of things we have done. I stopped drinking quite a while back because i was doing some crazy arse shit that is like a nightmare to me now. I will be haunted by some memories for years to come no doubt.

I got into a lot of trouble when i was young.

I understand some people needing to have beliefs. If those poor people believe in god, how ironic considering god is the one who has made their lifes exist in a poor country probably with bad food and bad water. Well he must be a great god then right:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: He really cares for the millions of starving people doesn't he:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

right on.

how we turn out is both genetic and environmental, and the importance of each is something I am never sure about and changes at times.

but, I am sure that being in the right environment gives most a great head start.

i dont really think there is much impotance in religion v atheism debate.

if we are to know our purpose or why we are even here, it really comes down to being inquisitive about our social and physical enviroment around us and having empathy for people and the issues around us as we understand them.

I suggest this even though we all have an individual desire to prosper through our immediate self interest, albeit some a lot more giving than others.

the rest is just intellectual bullshit that improves nothing beyond a mere rave about a supposed higher being.

Spartacus is impotent

Atheism vs Religion is extremely important as its the foundation of whether or not you believe humans are inherently more important than other animals which is the basis of morality
If you don't believe that humans are divine beings capable of free will then why should you even bother?

Religeon is mankind's attempt to comprehend and capitolise on spirituality.
Philosophies and lifestyle choices, mindset etc - a lot of positives in many religeons, yes.
A lot of systemic negatives if you're able to view more broadly

Nicely put.

Facts:

A person's religious beliefs are, generally and on average, based on where you were born (e.g. your parent's religion will be your religion).

All humans have a desire for a god, they just fulfill it in different ways. (From blowing yourself up to following the Kardashians)

Atheism and a belief in evolution are forms of religion and "belief". It's based on faith in your convictions (just like a Hindu or Catholic) and even has a clergy hierarchy (e.g. Scientist specialists, philosophers, etc)

"Proof" of the unprovable (at least, proof based on our limited knowledge of physics and the universe) can only be provided based on a person's own beliefs. Therefore, we need humility to accept other's viewpoints, or at least tolerate them. After all, chances are, base on simple math, is that everyone is wrong, or only partly right at best.
