Good way to earn a dollar for these athletes.
Do they still have the bonuses for winning all their races / events?

Look at singular sports like golf, tennis. Top 300-400 earn plenty with or without sponsors.
 
of course, golf and tennis are much bigger sports in terms of fans and sponors.

but a lot of athletes would make a good living.

many also get support from national govts for a reasonable wage.
