Kyle Thomson, 22, died after dropping more than 300 pounds on his chest while working out at an Iowa gym. Picture: Kyle Thomson

A 22-year-old student was bench-pressing 315 pounds (143kg) when the barbell slipped from his hands and crushed him to death in a US gym.

Kyle Thomson, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University in the city of Ames, was working out at Elite Edge Transformation Centre in Ankeny, north of Des Moines.
Ankeny Fire Department chief James Clack said the barbell fell on Thomson’s neck after it slipped from his hands.
He was taken to a Des Moines hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A spokesman for the gym said Thomson was lifting as part of an advanced baseball training program. He was with a spotter at the time of the incident.

A former co-worker Stephen Smith told Des Moines Register that Thomson was passionate about lifting weights.
Thomson posted on Facebook in October that he had completed the gym’s ‘20-pound challenge’, which meant he had shed 9kg in six weeks.
Thomson, who would have graduated in May next year, wanted to work for Des Moines Police Department as a dog handler.
His funeral will be held on Saturday (local time)

That spotter would be feeling pretty awful, if the spotter was on his own, there is not much he could he could of done .

It's almost to the point where the standard type bench press is more hazardous (stupid) than the smith machine.

How did you come to that conclusion? At 23 it shouldn't be anyone's time to go.

Exactly, one of the stupidest comments I have ever read on the Internet.

Then the Lord spoke to Shrek and Spartacus out of the storm. He said:

with words without knowledge?
[SUP]3 [/SUP]Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
[SUP]5 [/SUP]Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
[SUP]6 [/SUP]On what were its footings set,
or who laid its cornerstone—
[SUP]7 [/SUP]while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels[SUP][a][/SUP] shouted for joy?[SUP]8 [/SUP]“Who shut up the sea behind doors
when it burst forth from the womb,
[SUP]9 [/SUP]when I made the clouds its garment
and wrapped it in thick darkness,
[SUP]10 [/SUP]when I fixed limits for it
and set its doors and bars in place,
[SUP]11 [/SUP]when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther;
here is where your proud waves halt’?

[SUP]12 [/SUP]“Have you ever given orders to the morning,
or shown the dawn its place,
[SUP]13 [/SUP]that it might take the earth by the edges
and shake the wicked out of it?
[SUP]14 [/SUP]The earth takes shape like clay under a seal;
its features stand out like those of a garment.
[SUP]15 [/SUP]The wicked are denied their light,
and their upraised arm is broken.

[SUP]16 [/SUP]“Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
or walked in the recesses of the deep?
[SUP]17 [/SUP]Have the gates of death been shown to you?
Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?
[SUP]18 [/SUP]Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?
Tell me, if you know all this.

It was his time to go, irrespective what you believe or don't believe.

Stupid comment? That's a matter of opinion. When it's my time to go, I go. When it's time for my 3 and half year old daughter to go, she goes.

That's what I believe, and that belief gives me great comfort. I do not expect you to believe what I believe or how and why I believe it, but the least you can do is not be judgmental about it as you always are. Show some respect man, as respect is reciprocal, and disrespect can sometimes get you into trouble when you least expect it.

Peace.

Agree with [MENTION=2727]Fadi[/MENTION];
Here at Ausbb we show respect weather we agree or disagree with ones comments. One, twice we all make mistakes but continuously.....
Tone down Sparty.

What it tells me is the spotter had no chance of reacting to a catastrophic failure because people are largely unreliable and that when I train alone and bench from stands with no safeties that the risk matrix says death is a possibility.

I have often contemplated my demise and while I always assumed it would come from being crushed under a car or murdered by a scumbag, its time I considered my other hobbies potential to cause proper harm.

Perhaps I shall rethink my position on benching in its current form.

yes, that is exactly how I understood it.

sorry for my own crude interpretation.

I remember once a 100kg bar rolled on my head while I was talking before a bench press set as bar rolled onto my face. yes, I was stupid for not concentrating, but it would have been a most unfortunate event if I had died. Fate, no just a very rare accident that should never have happened.
