DEDICATION to a strict diet and exercise plan can prove challenging to the most determined gym member.
That's not the case for Ipswich's youngest bodybuilding champion Declan Wiseman, who has already made his mark on the world of Australian Natural Bodybuilding.
Earlier this month, the 18-year-old took out two of the top titles with a first in the Open Men's Fitness and was crowned Overall Queensland State Champion.
Indulging in a rare chocolate splurge to celebrate, Wiseman said years of preparation had finally paid off.
"It's definitely put me on cloud 10,” he laughed. "It's only just started to sink in now and it's made me realise that if you work hard over a few years and stay true to what you want to do, it pays off.
"You aren't satisfied though. Once you conquer what you wanted to do you're proud of the achievement but then it makes you set your sights on the next thing.”
It was the second time the St Edmunds College student has taken out the overall title. Competing against much older rivals in the under 30's competition, Wiseman said he was feeling more confident with each contest.
"It's given me confidence and made me hungrier to do better and better each time,” he said. "Next year I want to get a pro card which is a top three finish in a pro event.
"Basically I see each year as quality stepping stones regardless of the placings. As long as my physique is getting better and better that's all I care about. It's the personal improvement.”
"It's not something you come in and just win straight away. I've worked up the ladder and it's taken me three years to get to this point.”
While there is only one body on stage at the end of the day, Wiseman has a proud team of supporters behind him.
Friends, family and the specialised Ipswich gym Body Boutique have all played a vital role in getting the recent graduate to the top of his chosen field. A qualified chef, Wiseman's mother Debbie has been a big help in sticking to a strict and healthy diet.
"I've got my mentor talking in my ear,” Wiseman said. "My coach who is always there for my motivation, mum helps me cook the food for my diet and even my dad tells me what muscle groups need improving so he's always in my ear too.
"So basically for me to be on stage there's about five other people who are really significant who are behind what I'm doing. It's good to know you have plenty of support and motivation and that all the hard work has paid off.”

With a growing honour board of bodybuilders lining the walls of the gym, Body Boutique owner Marian Leonard and trainer Simon Giacomotto have been equally impressed by Wiseman's commitment.
A fellow bodybuilder and Mr Tropics title holder himself, Giacomotto has enjoyed playing the role of mentor for his young charge.
"I've seen a big boost even just in local gyms,” he said. "I see a lot more enthusiasm in just wanting to compete in bodybuilding where before a lot of people thought it was out of reach.
"That's why the natural federations are really important in helping people make the most of what they do.
"Declan in particular has been beacon for this place since he came in. He sets the benchmark of what kids his age should be with their head and discipline, everything that it takes to get on stage which says a lot about his character.”
After delaying his dream of competing for a pro-card this year in order to finish grade 12, Wiseman is already looking towards 2017.
With less than a month to go until school finishes, the ready graduate is currently completing his Cert III in fitness at View Fitness, and also hopes to take up a trade course on the side.
Always ready to take on another challenge, Wiseman said he was getting asked for tips on how to get big before his schoolmates take on 'schoolies'.
"You get a lot of people who come up to you for support and advice on how to get bigger,” he said. "If someone else does it that can inspire others to get healthy. That feels good to know you are helping others strive to want to do better as well.”
To any classmates who are hoping to impress on the beach this summer, Wiseman had one more lesson to pass on to his fellow 'gym junkies'.
Despite boasting a body most adults would be envious of, the young bodybuilder said it was all about staying level-headed.
"People don't want to associate themselves with someone who wants to talk about it,” he said. "It's all about staying humble and I treat every competition like my first.
Every time someone you haven't seen before can come out of nowhere and win everything. It's exciting and you get really pumped leading up to the competitions.”
