I have long term goals but yearly ones work well for now.
Depending on the goals, some can be long or short but I think 6-12 months is a good time frame for most as I prefer slow changes rather than overnight results.

As per the other thread with goals for 2015, i'm tracking reasonably well.
Set 4 goals, have achieved 2 and well on the way to the other 2.
 
Lifted everything I wanted to lift but have never squatted 600lb. It's still possible but not if I have a life.
 
3 months.

Setting actual tangible goals any longer and you probably won't stick to it.
