Had a premi baby 3 weeks in public hospital same consultant specialist as private patients were paying for best public hospital that all the private patients with complications were coming too private room cost 0 care given priceless.
I dont really get the I get to choose my doctor who knows who is a good doctor.

I don't know what a knee hip etc reconstruction would cost out of pocket with no private cover but I think Medicare pay a large percentage of it with or without cover

i will you let you know, my mate is soon getting a knee operation, no private cover.
Is he paying up front for it or just going though public waiting list?
Like I said Medicare pays a high % of the op for private patients even though people with private cover like to fill they are no burden on the medical system

he will pay upfront, unless he can get in public quickly. it could be $16,000, but he will get some back from medicare.

How did we end up with religion bashing in this thread, I thought we had one specifically for that sort of thing?

I have no problem hanging shit on religion but just spreading it all over the forum is a bit much. Same for goats, tits and anything else off topic really.

This is why I stick to the off topic thread, I usually have nothing useful to contribute.

Regarding public vs private we have no private hospital in town and only one anesthetist so paying for it makes no difference. A friend went in as a private patient when she had her baby but when my wife had ours there was only 1 other girl in the entire ward for a couple of days. So she was out of pocket for the same service that we got.

I'm glad I've been paying health insurance, pretty sure my wife chose the stupidity cover included, cos I'll need it now, been in and out of the clinic every day and have to come back everyday till I leave, mrs reckons I'll get most of it back.

Yeah there's no doubt there is a lot of overlap between the private and public system, and I don't have time to keep up to date as to who is the best surgeon for each procedure that I may or may not have. I like to see a database for each doctor's success rates made public. That would keep the docs and surgeons accountable and that is only fair when you think about how you're putting your life in their hands literally.. plus just look at how much they are earning!

travel insurance is different to private insurance mate.

Haha get travel insurance for sure if you're going on hols.. that's a no brainer. Especially if the destination happens to be the states, they charge way more than what you would ever expect for hospital treatment there (for foreigners)
