It may be the way you worded it but I hope you're not implying that you can't do compound movements with machines.
Nah, I didn't feel the need to have to spell it out and when you think about it all movements are compound to varying degrees. Its virtually impossible to exercise one muscle and one muscle only without the peripheral muscles getting some action too.

Just don't do clean and jerk on the smith machine lol..
