Bodybuilder's family want truth

The family of a much-loved Australian bodybuilding champion who died following complications from a kidney transplant say a Sydney hospital is hiding the truth.
After collapsing at home on August 31, 2011, Luke Wood, 35, was rushed to Westmead Hospital where he died from a severe haemorrhage, eight weeks before he was due to be married.
He had undergone a kidney transplant on August 20, but on August 23 his body started showing signs of rejecting the organ.
Mr Wood was taken to hospital and given drugs as dark bruises appeared on his abdomen.
He was discharged on August 26 and told to return for daily check-ups for a month, but died five days later.
His death is being examined by the NSW Coroner - with a particular focus on his treatment at Westmead Hospital.
His fiance told reporters outside the Glebe Coroners Court on Monday that his family feel cheated.
"Obviously there's something that's happened that they're trying to hide and we just want the truth to come out," Nora Haddad said, with her sister and Mr Wood's sister at her side.
She described her fiance as an inspirational, humble, gentle giant who spent lots of time with fans.
Arnold Schwarzenegger had personally invited Mr Wood to his eponymous bodybuilding competition.
As a younger man Mr Wood played with the Canterbury-Bankstown and Balmain Rugby League junior clubs, where he developed his interest in bodybuilding.
Questions have been raised about whether Mr Wood was on steroids and if they played a part in his death.
"Luke admitted to use of steroids to some medical practitioners," counsel assisting the coroner Patrick Griffin said on Monday.
"His musculature was consistent with the use of steroids."
But Ms Haddad said she didn't believe that steroids should be an issue in this case.
The inquest continues.

Steroids shouldn't be an issue? Would he have needed a kidney transplant in the first place if he didn't use?
He was probably still using straight after getting the transplant. If that's the case and partly the reason for his body rejecting the donor, then it's a huge issue.

the inquiry is about his treatment not his illness. what killed him isnt whats being looked at so its not relevant

First I've heard of the inquiry but that's what I read. There's probably no doubt his treatment was a contributing factor to his death.

It is worrying that such a large hospital only had 1 CT scanner operating. That and a locked room containing medical files would be a serious breach of OH&S

Why was he out of hospital 3 days after a transplant?? Did I read that right?
My brother had to wait 10 days post transplant and doctors said that was a short stay!

Wonder if that bloke is going to come back here that was threatening to sue anyone that suggested luke wood was on steroids.

Yeah seems a quick exit from hospital after a major transplant.
Must've been short on beds.

same thing happened to me in regards to an abcess, being a steroid user they basicaly didnt give a fuck. few days later was back and needed emergancy surgery, was in a bad way

You think the room should be left unlocked so anyone can stroll in and access medical records.

Bodybuilder Luke Wood died after hospital delays, inquest told

The death of a champion bodybuilder followed hospital treatment that was marred by delays in receiving a vital scan, and the failure of doctors to access treatment notes, a coronial inquest has heard.
But the inquest also heard that anabolic steroid use was one of the contributing factors in his death.
Luke Wood, 35, a six-time winner of the Australian Body Building Championships, died on August 31, 2011 - 11 days after he underwent kidney transplant surgery.
The NSW Coroner's Court heard on Monday that the immediate cause of the bodybuilder's death was cardiac arrest but that this was related to "a massive haemorrhage" in his abdomen following the transplant.
The inquest heard that doctors at Westmead Hospital made a desperate attempt to save Wood's life with an emergency laparotomy, but were unable to resuscitate him when he went into cardiac arrest.
The inquest heard that, after arriving at the hospital about 3pm, the bodybuilder had to wait for up to four hours before completing a CT scan to determine the cause and extent of his abdominal bleeding.
The Emergency Registrar who initially treated Woods, Sambantham Muralitharan, said that he had requested the scan "urgently" and believed it had happened within an hour of his request about 5pm
However, the inquest heard that, partly as a consequence of the many patients waiting to use Westmead's one working CT scanner, the scan was not completed until 6.51pm.
The court also heard that doctors could not access the full medical notes regarding Wood's kidney transplant and his post-operative treatment.
"We have evidence that the relevant renal notes were locked in a room and not accessible. Did you know that?" counsel assisting the commission, Patrick Griffin, asked Dr Muralitharan.
Dr Muralitharan said that the notes had not been necessary because a kidney specialist involved in the transplant operation was present in the emergency department on the day in question.
"But how could any registrar on the renal team or on the emergency team not be fully appraised of the minutiae of Luke's case if they didn't have his notes?" Deputy NSW Coroner Sharon Freund asked the doctor.
The doctor said that some of this information was available via the hospital's computer system.
Mr Griffin said that the adequacy of the hospital's treatment of Wood would be the main focus of the inquest.
However, he said that there was evidence Wood's steroid use was also a contributing factor to his death by causing the heart condition cardiomyopathy.
"Luke admitted to the use of steroids to some of his medical practitioners though not to his family or his GP," Mr Griffin said.
"But this inquest is not about the use and abuse of anabolic steroids."
The hearing continues.
