For me I used to do the old school 10-12 week bulk then cut etc etc - Have not done this for years but have planned to go old school again after the rugby season - I will be doing a 10 week bulk - followed by a cut - then another shorter bulk and then trying to lean down and maintain for next season.
I found this used to work very well for me - as I stated I have not followed this for years but think its worth a crack again.
