If all great powerlifters were "jacked" (ie muscular AND lean) and all training styles gave the same results, wouldn't they all be competing in BB as well?
 
Not really, I just don't like Oni and his supporters.

Oh cry me a river. I've been swearing my head off on here long before 0ni crawled out from under his bridge. You calling him a "tough guy" was just too funny. But do I agree with 0ni more than you? Probably yes. I've been both a powerlifter and "bodybuilder" and although I dabbled in many different training methods I found the fundamentals of my training actually changed very little. If you really want to get big or strong then "powerbuilding" is generally the best way to go, then maybe at an advanced level you might start to specialise moreso but you will have made your best gains when you combined principles of both methods. Sure there are lifters who have made great gains in either sport purely by specialising but to paraphrase [MENTION=3627]Silverback[/MENTION]; they succeeded in spite of this possibly due to genetic advantages, drugs, or sheer fucking determination.

Muscular and lean are 2 different things. Also you can be jacked and not lean. I think you meant shredded too, get your bro terminology right :p
 
ok, my views are in the minority in any case in regard to training.

I only offer my perspective; it could be wrong.

Arnold and Franco: former European powerlifting champs.
Sergio: former Cuban weightlifting champ.
A lot of the American golden age bb'ers started off strength training for football...

Well as I said before, peptide hormones changed everything. There are still a few people that have switched between the two. Stan Efferding and Sam Byrd would be the canonical examples

FZ: We didn’t go to failure a lot; sometimes we’d do forced reps before a contest to push past a peak, but mostly we’d pyramid up for 6–7 sets. Surprisingly, Arnold didn’t use very heavy weights for a guy his size, but his form was great and he really knew how to isolate his muscles. He’d do curls with only 35-pound dumbbells, but because his form was so great and he’d squeeze each and every repetition, he got great results.

Welcome to the advanced athlete stage... however Arnold did a lot of powerlifting training in his off season, little is known about the programming.
 
Powerlifters do their curls the same as well
What point are you trying to make here?
 
Spartacus, many powerlifters will do their training in the exact same way that article above describes xD
 
so, I am not disputing that.

My claim is that heavy powerlifting training is not necessary for bb, or any other non-lifting sport. That is about it really.

This argument that you need do a powerlifting base, like bb's of the 1970s, does not convince me.
