Previous work from China's Nanjing Medical University suggests that exercise later in the day has more benefits for health, particularly cholesterol. The reasons are unclear, but may be linked to changes in metabolism throughout the day.
The same team are now conducting a larger trial of 300 people - half of whom will walk in the morning and half later in the day.
In the three-month trial, each group will be asked to walk for 30 minutes a day, at least five days a week. The research team will track levels of inflammation in the volunteers, as well as taking other measurements such as cholesterol and blood pressure.
