Gym floor too soft?

Drifter

My garage gym currently uses 20mm thick tatami rubber floor mats, much like the ones used in a Judo or BJJ class. I'm thinking they are too soft and I'm just lucky I haven't injured myself.

I squat barefoot and am fine, but my mates wearing shoes have commented on it.

Should I buy proper gym flooring?

I have the rubber gym mats and they are good but very pricey. Other people I know just put ply or chipboard down (to save the plates) and cheap carpet over that provides a good surface.
