Side bends done right are more (should be) of a lower back exercise, done wrong they are a back wrecker.

Correct. I noticed you must have good form with side bends otherwise the lower back can very easily come into play. It feels natural to want to curve the shoulder around the front of the body as you do the side bend, but this shouldn't be allowed to happen as it will naturally engage the lower back into the movement.
