How-to Decrease Body Mass? - (On doctor's advice)

Barry_

New member
Good Evening,

My name is Barry and I need to lose some body mass.

I'm 87KG, and over 6 foot.

I do the following per-day (one session);

70 Pushups
300 Situps

Weights;
22.5KG Barbell
13 repetitions of both exercises, (wrists facing up, wrists facing down)
12.5KG Dumbells
13 Repetitions(see images on the right of this page:exrx.net/WeightExercises/Brachioradialis/DBHammerCurl.html
13 Repetitions of Front Raises
(see: sport-fitness-advisor.com/dumbbellexercises.html)
13 Repetitions of Shrugs (see above link)
13 Repetitions of Shoulder Presses
(see: better-exercise-fitness-for-life.com/dumbbell-exercises.html)

I need to decrease mass. (On doctor's advice)

I've been building up too quickly (and putting on a bit of weight) which has stretched my skin beyond repair. The only way to prevent any further damage, is by decreasing mass.

I have considered merely stopping my entire routine, however I'm a little afraid that this will adversely effect my health and make my current muscle turn into fat.

Can I please have some recommendations on how I can safely decrease mass/weight?

Thank you in advance,

Barry

BTW: The sport I play is basketball

That routine looks pretty..... useless. Sorry mate. There is no back work and no leg work. You need to address that first.

Just keep training and reduce bodyfat and retain muscle. 87kg and over 6 foot? Seems about a perfect weight to me? Unless you are overly fat, so just reduce the fat. The stretch marks are going to stick around though, so you may as well stay at what you are.

If I look at my BMI (load of ****) it says I should lose 10kg which is probably what the doc would say. If you are fit and healthy what is the problem?

Are you serious?
87kg at over 6 foot is not big at all (unless ultra low body fat).
What weight were you before you bulked up and over how long was it?

I 6ft too and went from 74kg to 89kg in about 11 weeks a couple of years ago, got no stretchmarks.
Maybe you have very tight/inflexible skin?
Where are the stretchmarks?

BTW, muscle does not turn into fat as you say it will !!!!

I'd like to address this part of your reply...

I can't do leg-work because of my age, but back-work is probably something I should do.

I don't have a bench in my room, so if there are any back strengthening exercises you could recommend, which don't require a bench, please inform me of them.

Lower shoulder, back and front (close to the armpits but before the hair :p)

I haven't been measuring my weight, or height. I measure my height once a year, on my birthday! I'll be able to tell you my exact height in 3-4 days.

A probably have tight-skin, I'm not sure.

So you're saying that if I merely continue what I'm currently doing, the stretch-marks won't grow?

Are there any preventative measures I can take to stop Stretch-Marks?

Barry, you are one confused dude.

What is up with your age and not training legs? You are 17 (I was expecting to see that you were 65 or something) THAT IS PERFECT. See pic below, Max is 17 and squatting 156kg! There is no reason you cannot train legs. If you don't it will be worse for you.

A Bench has nothing to do with Back, that is all Chest and Triceps. You have Dumbells and Barbells so you can train your back. How much weights do you have? What exactly do you have?

I have never had to deal with stretch marks, maybe someone here can help you. Do you have a high amount of bodyfat?

Yeh, I was thinking you're like 65 too...

One of my mates got stretchmarks when he was around 17, and was not even doing any weights - was just the fast rate that he was growing.. Might simply be tough luck. His stretch marks are still there, but not as prominent.

I know women use Cocoa Butter on around their stomachs when they're pregnant, supposed to minimise stretch marks..

dude you need to read and do lots of it. and learn a few things
i would say most people have stretch marks. i have them pretty much where you do. and yes i use vitamin e cream and coco butter and it works on reducing them.

Not sure how I can test that. Yesterday I beefed up the amount of situps I do in a row from 100 to 300... so I suppose stomach fat will be gone soon...

Also, I have heard that leg/thigh strengthening weights adversely affect growth?

I have a 22.5KG Barbell & 2x 12.5KG Dumbbells. I'm be happy to add more weight as needed. (purchase)

Hahahahaha, unsure why everyone's thinking I'm so old!

Hmm... I'll look into it.

I'll give that a go, thanks.

Barry, i'd love to know where you get your info from, whoever it is STOP LISTENING TO THEM!!!

have a read around the forum for a bit, there should be enough info on here to set you straight.

and upping sit ups from 100 to 300 will not get rid of your stomach fat

Because you said you can't do leg work due to your age.
We assumed you're in your 60s or 70s and had bad arthritis which stopped you from doing leg work, or something like that :)

Aha! I see now!

No, it's that I'm growing! :D

Situps will not decrease your body fat, what you eat will do that and also cardio work.

Have a read of this thread

That is what you need to be doing.

Thanks, I'll take a look at it.

However, I think I should change my routine to more of what a basketballer needs.

(shooting, passing, jumping & running [and agility])

Any recommendations? (keeping into consideration my age [the fact that I'm still growing])

Thank you,

Barry

Well, you sound like the expert here. Why are you even asking us about this? Your age has nothing to do with lifitng weights, forget everything that you have learnt from wherever you have learnt it, it is incorrect.

That young fella that is 17 and squatting on the previous page. He plays both club Soccer and Basketball, his father is PTC the guy who wrote the thread I told you to have a look at. He is a strength and conditioning Coach.

OF COURSE you need to be shooting, passing, doing ball skills work etc. if you are a basketball player. If you are not already doing that, how are you a Basketball player?

Your first mention of your "program" was weights and bodyweight excersizes, hence the reason I have told you to check out that thread.

'Not sure how I can test that. Yesterday I beefed up the amount of situps I do in a row from 100 to 300... so I suppose stomach fat will be gone soon...'

Like a the other two guys said, increasing the amount of sit ups you do will not burn off your stomach fat, it could in fact make you appear more more if you increase the size of the muscles there without burning off the fat.

There is no way to 'spot reduce' fat so eat a healthy diet and do plenty of cardio combined with weight training and your body fat will reduce.

You are at the perfect age right now to set yourself up for life with good eating and exercise habits, which if you stick to will make you live longer, stronger and more capable than the average joe.

My advise to you is to stick around on this forum and learn from everyone here and you'll be seeing results before you know it!

Okay, thanks for all your help (everyone)

[also, take a closer look at my age... especially this Monday!]

I will create another topic asking about increasing my Vertical Jump & agility.

Hi Barry,

What on earth the doctor was thinking I do not know.

I am an old f@rt and have had sooooo many weight training related injuries to spine rotors etc but the one thing I have learned is that the doc is not always god.

Can you see someone else?

eg.

Imagine me going to doc for a check up at age 28 with a 32 inch waist weighing 95 kg. The doc said with great authority looking at the height weight chart that I was obese. Forearms vascular, cheek bones hanging out like a terminator and shoulders wider than Herman Munster. LOL

Trust your own sense.

If you are not well then by all means take steps to fix things.

BUT

In the end the docs, surgeons and specialists all send you away to heal by yourself.

Stay happy.:)
