[Cycling] First time triathlon?

So I've been making a list of things I'd like to achieve (in keeping with my nickname Keen Katie), and I've decided I'd like to complete a triathlon. In Sydney they hold an easy-peasy triathlon (the BRW triathlon) where the distances are relatively short ie. with a 400m swim, 10km ride and a 4km run.

The swim and the run are doable for me, but the cycling? Help! I haven't ridden a bike since I was 7 or 8. Last time I did, when I rented a bicycle while on holidays a few years back, I hit a fence post and flew over the top of the handlebars when I didn't steer round a curve properly. Haven't been back on a bike since and pretty scared to do so.

What should I do re: conquering my fear of the bike? And please don't say "riding a bike's easy, it will come back to you in no time", the last time I rode a bike I spent half an hour wobbling from side to side being very unstable before I finally fell off (at high speed too, went flying for 3 metres!). Also I live in Sydney which is notoriously bad for cyclists to ride in...

Either I would ride my husband's road bike or buy myself a bike (something else I have no clue about)

Thoughts?
