Oppinions of Crossfit

Now I know some people see crossfit and their minds straight away go to horrible technique blah blah. I'm just curious as a lot of you guys are competitive pl'ers - what is your opinion of crossift? Is it worthwhile? Is it a crock?

Now while crossfit isn't bringing anything too groundbreaking to the health and fitness industry it does package weight training and strong compound movements in a new way that makes it appealing to a broader audience, so that's gotta be good right?

As for their fitness levels compared to PL'ers you just have to look at the ProRaw rep challenge a while ago where Amy (forgot last name?) cleaned up - now granted she is at an elite level in crossfit as well but the point remains.

So how do you feel about it? Have you ever tried any of the benchmark workouts or WODs? Have you seen people do them and thought forget that...?

It's definitely better than a lot of programs people do at your average gyms.

But it's not ideal for anyone who wants to specialise in anything and the WOD thing lacks any structure or programming to your training.

i'm sorry but the first thing that comes to mind when i consider Crossfit is super fit hot girls...

I'm too busy admiring the scantly clad ladies to even look at what exercises they are doing..

Now that i've got that out of the way..

Some of the technique, esp. the world games and arnold games highlights is amazing.. overhead squat form the gives me cold shivers..

I know a few powerlifters that play around with the cross fit complexes at the end of their workouts.. using them more for GPP than anything else..

The other thing to take note of though is the weights generally used are considerably lower than the pro raw challenge..

It all comes down to what your goals are and which god you want to kneel down before..

Technique aside... the big issue is you spend too much time piss farting around trying to get good at everything to the point you suck at everything. It could be months between heavy lifting attempts, no real progression etc.

You will notice that no one starts in crossfit gets good at it, it's typically people who are either very strong or very fit that actually do well. I think in Adelaide it's close to 1500 a year to train...

Get stronger, get faster, get fitter. That order.

My thoughts, stupidly random program leading to avoidable injuries (like the brilliant high rep deadlifts and box squats routine that resulted in a number of achilles tears).

So whats the deal with them? What do they actually do? All i have seen of them is chicks in tight pants doing overhead squats.

Agreed.

Crossfit:

Turning men into women and women into men.

Are you doing crossfit?

I ask because you seem to know a lot about everything, do you own a gym as well?

Lol no cross fit. I do some complex/cardio style weights every so often but never done a Crossfit workout.

And I'd say I have a reasonable theoretical knowledge. Just yet to learn how to apply it practically. I still look to most of the guys on here for advice/knowledge

Have to agree the WOD is a one size fits all concept, yes it might be good for competitions but not every workout

Recipe for Crossfit

Take 1 Standard Scoop of Circuit Training, mix in 3 large servings of inflated self worth, 1 Tablespoon of unnecessary verbosity (broad modal domains), Add a huge amount of male shirtless training, a light dusting of decent training concepts and then blend with large volumes of excellent marketing.

Voila, Crossfit!

That will be $60 a week, please.

I've been doing crossfit for 4 months now, weve used crossfit principals at my boxing club for years to train fighters, as well as powerlifting movents and traditional boxing conditioning.

This thread was started in the wrong place..............

Im 80kg, b/p 120 , squat 175 , dead 205 since ive started doing crossfit (once a week) my bodyfat has sky rocketed to 85% ....... im weak as piss and ive started growing a vagina ....

Im thinking of stopping aye??

The basic concept is fine. The girls are mighty fine. But there's a lot to frown over in the small details. Technique's already been pointed out repeatedly. Specifically, technique isn't always taught that brilliantly in the first place, and doing clean+jerks as part of a circuit is a sure way to see technique breakdown even further at the worst possible time. Oh, and the kipping pull ups. Hrmm. The actual programming is non-existent, which further weakens CF. But the girls are mighty fine.

Ok well I'll ask you guys this? have you ever tried a WOD and compared it to the times of others on there? obviously you won't be very competitive in your first go (probably) but you have to respect the fitness of some of the people who do it?

Never tried a WOD. Not something that would interest me at all. Its like running a marathon, I understand the endurance and mental toughness to do it but I have no interest in it or desire to run one.

I think if you have a goal (any goal, or even multiple conflicting goals) crossfit is a pretty inefficient way of getting to it. Kipping, sumo deadlift high pulls, snatching and GHR sit ups for time isn't exactly going to help you reach any goal.
