Fluid/wear n tear Knee's

I have been doing a 5x5 program, squatting 3 times a weak since feb 1st this year. I have been using a shoulder width stance, or slightly wider with feet facing forward, i have progressed from 90-130kg in 2 months, getting to parallel.

Recently i watched a video by mark rippotoe which talked about a sumo squat stance, wider stance - feet facing outwards, stupidly i tried this at 130kg and it felt ridiculously easy, so i tried 140kg for 2 reps and it felt easy.

The next day above my right knee on the outside it felt very tight, I iced it and it was fine the next day ( I iced both knee's, left was fine ). I'm in no actual pain, but both my kneecaps feel like the kneecap itself is slightly swollen or lacking fluid, specifically my right kneecap at certain angle's i press on it and it sort feels like fluid is bubbling out until it goes all the way in, my other knee doesn't seem to do this.

I have stopped squatting for the moment, going to keep RDL and work on upper body, should i see somebody? and specifically which specialist if so.

As a young child I had some knee problems/pains from growing too fast for my bone/muscle or something like that, long story short I wear inserts. I haven't been wearing them much in the last 2 years, and since i started training i train with bear feet, i feel shoes put me in a awkward angle, I'm seriously considering buying some weight lifting shoes.

I have read through every "knee injury" thread i could find, may seem like I'm over-reacting but i remember how much pain i was in as a child and i value my knee's greatly. Is this just wear 'n' tear which happens from squats?

My Flexibility isn't great, i'm working on it, i think I'm mainly lifting from hammies? Not much quad/glute activation - not sure.

tldr: fluid/swollen kneecaps
Should i rest, how long, should i see somebody, who?
Should i get weightlifting shoes?
am i going up too fast with weights? 90-140 in 2 months

i would go back to the stance you were using. Some powerlifters use the incredibilly wide stance. Plenty of very strong squatters use the just wider than shoulder width stance to great effect. Like what you were using before - The stance that you were making great gains from. And yes i would reccomend squat shoes, you can pick up a pair for only 75 bucks of undergroundelite.com

how old are and are you warming up properly before your squatting?

foam/pvc rolling? Get your quads, it band and piriformis done every day. Remember its all connected.
dynamic stretching and mobility work keep my knees healthy. I just do the joe defranco agile 8 after foam rolling and then some goblet squats and glute bridges.

if you don't already have a pair grab some knee sleeves! The 2nd best 50 bucks you can spend involving clothing only this kind you put on...

20yo, 100kg, 6'2. 19% bf
I usually do 20-30 BW squats, then 70kg x 5, then go straight into my 5x5 which starts atm 110,115,120,125,130

Sometimes i go sprint running after the workout, I haven't been using a foam roller but have been wanting to buy one for about a month

for a roller - go to bunnings and get a 100mm storm drain pipe its about 1/4 the price of a regular foam roller and will not go soft on you.

if its too hard wrap it in a towel before you use it.

I agree those pipes are way cheaper and you will get used to the foam roller (eventually even the hardest ones feel soft). Wrap it in some sports tape if you roll on a hard surface at home or it will scoot away on you.

Try and add some activation work for the glutes and hips (goblet squats, glute bridges, fire hydrants etc) and you will notice a big difference.

You are only 20 and can probably get away with a quick warmup for the most part right now without feeling it but do you want to be the guy who does these things for injury prevention or rehab? Know what I mean?
