Road cycling well cycling in general is quite an enjoyable and healthy recreation.

There are many reasons why you can cycle:

Health Benefits from Cycling Regularly


  • Cycling regularly will improve your overall fitness.
  • It can help you maintain a healthy weight.
  • It improves general muscle function.
  • Your strength and stamina will increase.
  • Cycling provides a good aerobic workout.
  • Cycling gives you a good workout without putting excessive strains on any joints.

  • Blood fat levels are reduced.
  • It burns body fat.
  • Cycling is a great way to get fit for people who have never taken exercise before or who haven't exercised for a time.

Cycling is also a great social activity , you can ride with family, friends or a cycling group in your city. Or if you choose you can ride on your own to get out in the fresh air.

One thing to always be aware of and that is riding a bicycle on the road can be hazardous, doesn't matter what level you are whether you are just starting out of a pro, other road users might not be as safety conscious or aware of the dangers as you, or as recent events have shown they just want you off the road. so always remain alert when on the road.


Other things to remember for safe cycling on the roads:

  • Wear a helmet.
  • Follow the road rules.
  • Don't ride on the pavement.(unless under the age of 12)
  • Think ahead; anticipate other road user's actions.
  • Don't jump red lights.
  • Walk across a pedestrian crossing with your bike, don't ride across.
  • Don't ride the wrong way up a one way street, unless there is signage allowing you to do so.
  • Ride clear of the kerb.(atleast 1 metre away)
  • Be visible-wear bright or reflective clothing.
  • Don't ride a bike without lights.
  • Always use your lights after dark, or in poor visibility.
  • Check your bike regularly for defective tyres, lights or worn brakes. Replace any that are faulty.
  • Always look and signal before you start, turn or stop.
  • Ride positively-it helps motorists know what you plan to do
Now that you know what's required of you on the road get on your bike and start to feel the benefit.
