Hi

Does anyone have any tip for healing bulged disks that pinch the nerves causing sciatica down one or both legs.I recently woke to find i had sciatica down my left leg.I have had xray and mri done and they have diagnosed me with a couple of bulged disks.Any ideas on fixing this asap as its been six months and its not getting any better???The doctor wants to pump me full of drugs and injections and other crap but they have informed me of the low success rate and i dont like cortizone steroids.Help!!!

have you gone to see a physiotherapist? a doctor will only pump you full of drugs as your finding out. Drugs are good to help ease the pain but a good physio will get you moving and also he will give you exercises to do to prevent it reoccurring.

Note this is only my opinion not a professional one:)

I'm suffering from one right now which was caused by my physio. You can see a chiro who would more than likely fix the problem with one visit if he's good (or wreck you if he's bad); or you can see a good physio who is willing to massage the muscles deeply and put the disc back into its right place (painful). This however may take you three visits. Personally, I'd go for the gentle manipulation instead of the spine twisting/cracking chiro procedure.

PS: Insist on thumbs being used with precision instead of useless machines!

I had the same thing happen physio made it worse, mine just needed time about and rest, I am just starting to get back into it all again now not happy with how weak I have become. The doc old me it would take 5 years to go away. I tried to lift again after 2 years but the problem was still there, (left leg would fail and I would fall over) not good for squats, having the bar on my shoulders was bad, as the weight would aggravate the discs. I am starting to get my strength back now, I am working up slowly. I had a second set of scans done after 6 years to see what had changed and the problem discs had shrunk apparently they look like sultanas. This is my experience I had a few other problems with my lower back at the same time, so I am hoping it goes better for you then it did for me. A bulged disc is still in the right place just that it is bulged out around the sides, so manipulation will not help much, just hurt like hell (this was my experience everybody is different). I will suggest that you be very critical of your posture and try to improve it where you can a little change makes a big difference. My problems were caused by work, my job involved heavy lifting while bending and twisting, if I had of been a bit smaller this would not of been the case. The doctors and work cover kept throwing me back in to normal work until they problem got real bad The next step a long is a ruptured disc, so take it easy and don't push to hard, the sooner you stop and rest the quicker it will heal.

As above this will not go away with any amount of massaging or manipulation, you have pushed the disk to the point it is inflammed, weakend and could possibly rupture with more stress..

Rest, the drugs will reduce the inflamation, and allow you to get through a normal day, they are not really designed to help you continue to punish the area..

Get a few opinions from a variety of professionals, go see an spinal / orthopedics specialist.

just another thought have you tried reflexology, they seam to take a different approach to physio, might be able to help take the pressure of the discs.

I went through the same thing, bulged discs.

Took it easy and definately recommend a Physio - initially it was pain management and helping to get the swelling down, then building up core strength to avoid it flaring up again.

About 6 months later all I do now is ensure I stretch well before activities and it's quite managable.

Take some anti inflams for pain.

Give it 4 weeks of TOTAL rest. No deads, squats or anything else to load up the back. Plenty of bench, chins, dips, curld, whatever, but no back loading.

Do backward bends. Place your hands on your hips and bend backwards, do this for 10 reps, minimum 3 times a day. Do these every day, forever. They are the movement that manipulates your disc back into place. They also stop it from re-occuring. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT

After 4 weeks slowly get back into your back loading, take it very easy. Maybe go up to 50% of your 1rm then ad 5kg each week.

Make sure your lifting correctly as that is very often the cause, either that or weak core.

Very true.

If you want to deload your back a little try hanging from a chinning bar for a while. It takes the weight off of your spine and adds BW pressure in the opposite direction it is normally accustomed to.
