[Article] Sugar.. Sweet Poison...

When it comes to identifying the most common poison that we willingly use against ourselves, an amazing feat resulting in millions of deaths worldwide every year, there really is no contest. The perpetrator is as unlikely a candidate as any you might wish to name, and its unmasking is probably all the more horrifying because this substance has burrowed its way into our civilisation like a parasite, draped in the false colours of comfort and familiarity. It’s whiter than heroin, sweeter than your fiancée, more soluble than the National Debt, and more pernicious than nicotine because, like a true demon, this little beauty comes in a million disguises and always dresses like a friend.
Dr William Coda Martin was the first publicly to label sucrose a poison. Martin’s definition came about after he determined the classical definition of a poison was “…any substance applied to the body, which causes or may cause disease.€. Refined sugar, or sucrose, is manufactured from cane and beet extract, which has had its proteins, vitamins and minerals removed to leave a white, crystalline substance devoid of any nutritional content, only offering empty calories.

Sugars contained in natural, whole foods are easily metabolised by the body. Nature has ensured that fructose, for instance, obtained when we consume fruits, has the necessary vitamins and minerals accompanying it to allow this type of simple monosaccharide sugar to be converted efficiently into glucose (blood sugar) and fully metabolised by our bodies for energy. Vitamins and minerals, which accompany fructose, are essential for these complete assimilation and conversion processes to occur. Sucrose on the other hand, cannot metabolise completely in our bodies, resulting in the formation of toxic metabolites such as pyruvic acid and abnormal, unstable sugars containing five carbon atoms.

These toxic by-products interfere with the respiration of cells, preventing the latter from acquiring sufficient oxygen to function correctly. These poisonous metabolites, in their free-radical or oxidation format, are constantly seeking to stabilise themselves by robbing our healthy cells of their available oxygen. This in turn degrades the cell and the cell dies.

Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin. Sugar ruined Danny Padilla's chance at the New York NOC in 1980/81?

He cracked and ate a dozen doughnuts the night before the comp.

Naughty boy

Wow he did it once?

Im sure smoking 1 packet of ciggarettes wont give me lung cancer..

There for smoking does not cause lung cancer...

This black and white thinking of "some one did this so its fine" markos is just sutpid.

There is a difference between insulin sensetive primed muscles receiving nutrients. Then the average person sipping on coke all day long...

Arnold shwarzenegger used to smoke pot and drink alcohol.. Other bodybuilders have been coked out of their brains.. Does this mean these things are now acceptable becuase they have good physiques?

Judging health by muscle mass composition is just a dick swinging contest...

The lecture is very interesting dave will find it as such, it explains how fructose on its own has the same effects on liver enzynampic pathways as alcohol... Causing inflamaiton thus leading to disease...

You can also have sex with someone who has HIV and not contract it... Does that make it a good thing to do because someone else did it and people do do this...

Lets live by what is and not what other people are doing...

To much of anything is bad....use some common sense and you will be right.

Its like the girl that sued maccas....

Iam a big believer in health and wellbeing but I hate all this 'no-common sense' bullshit that ppl come up with these days.

Yes sugar is bad, yes don't have to much ....everyone should know this....

But they dont........

But they dont........

They do know but ppl are stupid and lazy...thats why there are problems...

Everyone knows that eating shit is bad but when ppl get fat they blame it on everyone and everything else.

So many people just dont seem to understand that if it is sold it can be bad for them..

Or they pull that excuse "my friend does blah blah blah blah and eats mcodnalds every day and they are thin"

You would be suprised how many people think like this.

What is ****ing retardadly obvious to some is not obvious to others....

Thus why you see people buying white bread and bags of sugar daily...

Joel is right people are lazy, easily sucked in by marketing, looking for an easy feel good food etc

We are all like that, some of us just have more discipline or our goals are more important to us than eating crap. Since a lot of people like being lazy, hate hard work and can feel good through eating food we now have an obesity epidemic.

I, and most likely all of us, am no better as we all feel the same way. It is ingrained in our DNA for survival. Eat more and exercise less so we can survive easier when food is hard to come by. Personally I fight against this urge but every now and then it will win, most other people are beaten a lot more often and some have just given up the fight.
