i'm shorter, squat more AND don't wear a belt

He probably does need to wear a belt.... coz he has a weak core from wearing a belt. At least he has some depth to his squat.

Is there a background story to this guy or did you just decide to post it up?

I ALWAYS wear a belt at the
gym.

My understanding was it is to 'protect'
your Vertebrae???!!! NOT cause you have
a weak or strong mid-section??!!

Anyone here know any better?

Devante.

FFS we've been over this so many times.

Powerbuilder why do start pointless topics like this in the strength section?

I couldn't give a fat rats klacker whether one wears a belt or not, whether one takes copius amounts of suppliments, steroids, curls in the squat rack, wears head phones, shorts, tracksuit pants, head bands, thongs runners, worksout 2hours a day and on and on.
Just get your dead arse under the bar and lift.
What we don't want is to be to righteous and closed minded - that's when we stop learning.
What impresses me with this place is the work hard no bullshit ethic.
If I want to argue about the above I would go and join the teenagers at t-nation.
Think about it.
